All You Need to Know About National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN)

The National Open University of Nigeria (also known as NOUN) is an Open and Distance Learning (ODL) institution. NOUN is well-known for providing flexible, functional, cost-effective and accessible education adequate for flourishing in the 21st century and beyond.

Ever since the establishment of NOUN in July 1983, we have remain dedicated to deliver the best university education at the doorstep of every interested Nigerian.

Alhaji Shehu Shagari who is the founding president and the first executive president of Nigeria, envisioned a university with the capacity to admit and meet the education and skill needs of citizens no matter their status and circumstances. This vision of his was predicated on the realization that functional economy, a sustainable democracy, happy and prosperous people, all depend on knowledgeable citizens.

So the meeting of the educational needs of such citizens in a highly populous country like Nigeria was beyond the capacity of Nigeria’s conventional higher institutions which was the bedrock why National Open University (NOUN) was founded.

Despite the suspension of the academic institution in 1984 by the Federal Military Government that succeded the founding president, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, the resuscitation of NOUN in 2002 by the civilian regime of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, went side-by-side with the awakening of the vision that informed the initial establishment of the university.

NOUN leverages on Computer Technologies to deliver a modern packaged education tailored towards the globalised economy as a faithful trustee of the Nigerian people.

The University offers an exceptional Open and Distance Learning (ODL) academic programmes that meet the specific needs of all sectors of the global economy, in the Health; Arts; Law; Social, Agricultural, Physical and Management Sciences.

National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) Faculties

NOUN faculties are  in number, they offer a standard education with the use of up-to-date educational course materials. The faculties are Centre For Entrepreneurship And General Studies (CE&GS), Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Health Sciences, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Management Sciences, Faculty of Science and Faculty of Social Sciences.

NOUN Faculty of Access and General Studies

Centre For Entrepreneurship And General Studies (CE&GS) is a centre which services NOUN students in Entrepreneurship and General Studies (GST) with focus on creativity, innovation and life-long learning.

This faculty aim to be regarded as the foremost entrepreneurship and general study centre anchored by the university to provide sustainable entrepreneurial skills and general knowledge through comprehensive reach that exceeds all barriers.

NOUN Faculty of Access and General Studies mission is to adds life-long value to student’s entrepreneurial initiative, research, creativity, and innovation.

NOUN Faculty of Agricultural Sciences

The faculty target be regarded as the foremost Faculty, providing highly accessible and quality education in all areas of agriculture through ODL (Open and Distance Learning) and graduates suitable for the development of the society through research, teaching and learning.

NOUN Faculty of Arts

The Faculty of Education of the National Open University of Nigeria is regarded as the foremost Faculty of Education in Nigeria providing highly accessible and quality education anchored by social justice, equity, and national cohesion through a comprehensive reach that transcends all barriers.

NOUN Faculty of Health Sciences

The Faculty attempts to ensure that training emphasizes relevance, rather than just academic knowledge. The Faculty is intended to achieve two closely related objectives; one is to produce a broad range of health manpower that will serve the depressed and under-served rural and peri-urban communities in Nigeria, and the other is to design test programme models for health manpower development that would be replicable in various parts of the country, and hopefully in other countries of the world where health conditions are similar to those of Nigeria.

NOUN Faculty of Law

Welcome to the Facultyof Law, National Open University of Nigeria. Established in February 2007, the Faculty took off officially in July 2007 with the appointment of Dr. (Mrs) Alero T. Akujobi as Dean. The faculty aim to provide an Open Distance Learbing for anyone who is interested in studying Law.

NOUN Faculty of Management Sciences

The Faculty is to be regarded as the foremost Business School in Nigeria and Africa in general, producing high quality Management Professionals capable of supporting her myriad of public and private concerns through well-structured, convenient, flexible and accessible education via the distance-learning mode.

NOUN Faculty of Science

The Faculty of Sciences in NOUN is to be viewed as the foremost school in Nigeria, dedicated to using the ODL mode in training the individual to understand the world around via the acquisition of appropriate scientific skills, abilities and competencies both mental and physical as a means of integrating the individual to become a sound and effective citizen that will positively contributes to the developments of the society.

NOUN Faculty of Social Sciences

The faculty produces well-informed global citizens equipped with analytical and communicative, problem-solving skills, and a broadened view of the human experience; through the study of Social Sciences, aimed at promoting cultural sustainability, social justice, equity, equality, national cohesion, and excellence in content and character.

How to Apply for National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) Admission 

Admission Requirements

Undergraduate Programmes

  • 100 Level

Generally, the requirements for getting admission into the NOUN include five (5) credits in the SSCE/GCE O’Level/NECO/NABTEB or equivalents at not more than two (2) sittings obtained in subjects relevant to the proposed field(s) of study. The five (5) credits include Credits in English, Mathematics, and 3 other relevant subjects. More details can be found under programmes.

  • 200 Level

i) National Diploma at Upper Credit from recognized institutions.

ii) National Certificate in Education (NCE) in subject(s) relevant to the proposed  programme of study with a minimum of one merit and two passes.

iii).  International  Baccalaureates,  Interim  Joint  Matriculation Board (IJMB) with at least two ‘A’ Level papers in relevant subjects  and  pre-requisite  number  of  ‘O’  Level  credit passes.

Postgraduate Programmes

  1. To qualify for admission into any of the postgraduate programmes of the University, a candidate must meet, among others, all matriculation requirements of at least five (5) credit passes including English Language and Mathematics. Some programmes accept at least a pass in Mathematics.
  2. For Postgraduate Diploma Programmes, Candidates must possess either a minimum of pass Bachelors Degree in any discipline from a University recognised by the Senate of the NOUN OR a Higher National Diploma with a minimum of Lower Credit. For the Postgraduate Diploma in Legislative Drafting, the candidate must have been called to the Bar. Also for admission into the school of Business and Human Resource Management Postgraduate Diploma programmes, candidates with professional qualifications such as ACA, ACIS, ACIB, ACII, ACIA, etc may be considered on individual merit.
  3. For Master degree programmes, candidates must possess either a Bachelors Degree with a minimum of second class lower in the relevant field of study from a University recongnised by the Senate of the NOUN. However, holders of lower classification and with a minimum of 2 years of relevant post-qualification experience may be considered on individual merit OR a Postgraduate Diploma in related field of study from a recongnised University OR A Higher National Diploma with a minimum of Upper Credit in the relevant field of study. Candidate with membership certificate of relevant professional bodies may apply for the Master of Business (MBA) programme.
  4. For the Doctor of Philosophy Degree prorammes, candidates must possess a masters degree in relevant field of study from a University recongised by the Senate of the NOUN with a minimum score average of not less than 60% or a cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.5 on a 5-point scale.

Step by Step Procedure on How to Apply for Admission

  1. Visit the site www.nouonline.net
  2. On the Home Page, go to the Menu Bar, Click on Apply for Admission
  3. Select either Undergraduate Programme or Postgraduate Programme. Other programme is not available at the moment
  4. Goto “Choose Faculty” (note it can be found at the left hand side of the screen)
  5. Select Faculty
  6. Fill displayed form
  7. Click below to view admission criteria
  8. Click “Apply” to proceed.
  9. Take note of the UNIQUE ID displayed
  10. Click ‘Continue’ button
  11. Select Bank Branch as payment type
  12. Click “Pay”
  13. Copy and take your RRR number to any bank branch for payment.

After payment

  1. Perform step 1 to 3
  2. Goto “Continue After Payment”
  3. Input Unique ID, RRR number and Programme
  4. Click “Proceed”
  5. Fill Form.  Note: all fields marked with red star are compulsory.

After filling form

  1. Click “Submit”
  2. Print Admission Letter
  3. Visit the nearest study centre for screening
